WII GAME OF THE WEEK: Klonoa: The door to Phantomile
Genre: 2d Platform with 3d graphics
I’ll start right away by saying that this game might be a masterpiece ^^

Even though it’s a remake of the old Klonoa game on the first Playstation the game is still fresh, fast and fun to play with. It’s like the game mechanics didn’t age at all! But lets move into the details ^^

Klonoa, like I said, is an old game remade for Wii. The story talks about the land of dreams being suddenly in danger due to the dark lord Ghadius wanting to spread nightmares all over. Klonoa, who found the ring of the wind will have to try and stop his plottings.

The graphic look is VERY good. The Levels are colourful, various and the character models are very well-made. The game uses very detailed and astounding textures, reminding of Super Mario Galaxy. Nothing to say here. The graphic look of the game alone shows how this game is good. Of course, since good graphics don’t make great games lets see more about the game itself and not the look.

The gameplay, despite being the same of the old version is still fresh. Simple, yet addicting: Klonoa’s ring is able to inflate enemies. Once an enemy is inflated Klonoa will hold him above his head like a normal balloon. He will be able to throw it left, right, forward and backward or also use it to perform a double jump, also supported by Klonoa’s ability to float for a short period of time. Throwning inflated enemies can defeat other enemies too. This simple gameplay element also gives you simple puzzles to resolve that make going trough the levels more interesting.

Of course, beside enemies you’ll have to face good old traps and jumps, things that never miss in an old-school platform. The boss battles are quite fun too, usually putting you on a round stage, with the boss being in the center or running around trying to get at you.

The soundtrack is also very good. All the already awesome tunes from the old version of the game have been remade perfectly, making them even more epic. About the voice acting I’d suggest you to go for the original one…the Italian voice acting isn’t bad at all, but the English one is quite…how to say…unfitting, especially for Klonoa who sounds like sonic ^^; so yeah, go for the Fantomile voice acting and it should be alright (this is also the original voice acting from the first game).

The story of the game may look simple and kiddy, but if you run trough the entire game you’ll notice a few mature themes, along with a somewhat…deep feeling about the storyline of the series…I really hope for a third game ^.^;

No real flaws can be found for this game…maybe it’s quite easy for experienced gamers (except for the extra level) and quite short, but that’s all of it…seriously, if you love platformers you should get this. Along with Super Mario galaxy this is one of the best platformers on the console, I assure you.

I know, I’m enthusiastic about this game, but to me it was just that good ^^

Anyway, here are a few screens:

BACK FROM THE PAST: Warioland: The shake dimension
Genre: 2d platformer
Yep, yet another old-school platformer, just to give something to read to the old-school fans, I guess X3 ahem, anyway, Warioland: the shake dimension is the first chapter of the fampous warioland series on a home console. The previous games just went on portable systems, with one chapter on the Virtual boy too…unluckily, due to the limitations of the system that one isn’t too famous ^^;

Anyway, this chapter of the series takes the old gameplay adding a few twists to it thank to the motion controls. The story starts with an anime cutscene in wich a Viking-like monster shows a bag that, when shaken, makes endless gold spurt out of it. It looks like he also trapped the princess that used to own this bag, though one of her minions get to escape. Meanwhile the good old captain Syrup steals a huge globe from a museum, then she delivers it to Wario for a mysterious reason. Suddenly the minion gets out of the globe that seems to be a portal to the shake dimension. Telling wario about the magical bag Wario accepts to go and rescue the other minions and the princess.

The graphic look is very good, using a very toony look on the sprites (not one pixel shows by the way…they look just like cartoons) and hand-drawn backgrounds. Everything is molded together very well, the animations are lively and funny, the game makes use of good light effects and it almost looks like a real cartoon…only one difference is that this one is a game :3

The gameplay, like I said, is the old one…you go around jumping on platforms and on enemies, stunning them so that you can pick them up and throw them…there’s also the good old butt-smash X3. A few things have been added to it though. First of all when you pick up an enemy you can shake it shaking the wiimote…this not also stuns him more but could make an onion get out of the enemy…onions restore your health ;P this is also useful if you want to take the armour off some heavy enemies. Also the throwing can be aimed now, kind of like in Yoshi’s island, with Yoshi’s eggs. Other motion control-based engines are scattered trough the different levels, giving different situations to face. A last motion-based command is a very powerful punch that can be executed by shaking the wiimote once. This not only confuses enemies but it can make huge pillars move out of the way due to the strength of the impact.

The game asks you to go trough levels and save the little minions, who are trapped at the end of each level, in a cage. The level doesn’t end there though…as soon as you pick up the cage an alarm starts along with a countdown…you’ll have to shake the cage to break it and then go back trough the level and get out before the countdown ends. This will also be helped by some engine that will make Wario run fast trough the levels unless he bumps against a wall or something like that…enemies are not a problem XD

The bosses are quite fun to go against, some are harder than others and will always have you use different strategies to beat them. Beside all of this the game also haves certain sub-missions to complete and unlock, thing that gives the game a deeper longevity ^^

The soundtrack is very nice and various, using very catchy tunes for each level and, as expected, wario’s voice is always fun to listen to X3

The story, isn’t something of very deep as expected from a wario game, but afterall the warioland series always focused its success on the game itself rather than the story.

I can’t really find noticeable flaws…;perhaps the fact that some of the missions may be frustrating to some, but since gamers make such a big deal with being hardcore gamers who love challenges they shouldn’t complain about that, right ? :P

Anyway, here are a few screens of the game:
